Who needs a domain name? Anyone who wants to stay in business! In particular, small businesses. Even the Universal Postal Union (UPU) a United Nations agency over a century, is looking for the correct name. UPU, of course, was formed in 1874 to provide postal services among nations, a service that until now had been problematic at best that each country should have a separate treaty with any other country before the mail could not move. Today, the Union consists of 191 countries. The United States was a founding member and was active in the Union since 1875.
It should surprise no one that the government-sponsored postal services worldwide are struggling to stay relevant in an era when the Internet. Over the past twenty years have seen their business eroded by the onslaught of companies and private email. They have learned to work with private companies through subcontracting of their services, but in connection with the mail is still a mystery. After all, how can they compete with a free service to immediately notify worldwide?
Can they compete? Will they survive without government subsidies without end? The jury is still out on this issue, but they to try something new. Recently ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) The UPU has organized the exclusive right to administer and regulate a new top level domain. The new domain extension, Post Dot-UPU and its member organizations to differentiate themselves from common generic domain extensions as dot-com, dot-dot-net, and org. In theory at least, the public will be inclined to trust this expansion with its most valuable messages. Exactly how it will develop remains to be seen, but the UPU, working on a number of ideas including one e-mail messages in the messages sent by humans to areas where Internet does not exist or people without a team based rapid decline insurance customers and an open road and a century ago by the people of the telegraph. But to his credit they are not willing to resign immediately and still could find an application that kills!
As would any small business person who has the courage to prove his talent on the web. But first, do what the UPU and find the correct address length and appropriate domain name. Nothing will happen until you have your web address.
